review

Used the wave rider 16's extensively during marathon training and liked them. I was lured to the 17's by the significant weight reduction. So having now gone through a number of pairs of 16's and 17's I will add my two cents based on my highly personal experience.

So some stats: 6', 152 lbs. averaging 40-50 miles/week.

For me the 17's differ from the 16's in three key respects:

1. The 17's will not last nearly as long as the 16's. I'm through the tread and into the foam by 300 miles (unabashed heel striker). On the other hand, the 16's had less wear at 300 miles than other shoes typically have at 50 miles - they're just beasts and could easily go 500+ miles. Not a deal breaker for me given I'm at the age where I rotate out shoes at 300 miles regardless of wear. Have to save the legs...

2. The 17's are the only shoes (of any brand) that have a break-in period for me. It takes a full 75 miles before they completely loosen up for me. Again, not a deal breaker since they were still comfortable enough to get in those long runs and don't cause blisters or the like.

3. The 17's are light and provide plenty of cushioning for me. The payoff is that they are the only shoe I've ever worn where my feet and legs always feel great after those 20+ mile runs. And I've run in countless different models from many different manufacturers over several decades.

Of course, your experience may vary - running shoes are very individual. Which brings me back to Amazon today - these work great for me and it's time to order a new pair!
