Mizuno Men's Wave Rider 17 Running Shoe
CUSTOMER REVIEW
I'm 200lb and 6'3" with a neutral size 13 foot and have run in many, many different brands of shoes over the past nearly 8 years including Asics, Mizuno, and Nike. That said, for the past three years or so I've been happily running exclusively in Wave Riders from Mizuno.
I read the reviews about the 17s and decided to give them a try. When I tried them on my biggest issue was with the upper and where it folds on top of the toe box when you run/walk. For me there was a pronounced pinch point on both outer sides -- but on the inside of the shoe -- of the toe box. Lacing adjustments made no difference. It would have caused me major issues within minutes of the first run and I couldn't imagine it getting any better. It wasn't stiffness or something that would "break in." For that alone I would have returned them.
The other issue I had was the impression of overall build quality. I get that it's been redesigned to be lighter with synthetic overlays and thinner materials on the upper all around. But for me, the general impression of the upper of the shoe at this price point was not one of quality.
As far the "looseness" that some suggest due to the synthetic overlays and lack of support, it wasn't bad. I would have at least given them a fair shake if there weren't any other major issues.
My suggestion is to give them a try and see for yourself. The above are just my observations.
